The game of Video Poker begins when the bettor inserts credits (either tokens, tickets or money) into the machine and pushes the deal button. A 5 card hand will be "distributed" on the screen.
The Video Poker machine also has hold buttons, and enthusiasts should now decide which cards to keep and which to discard. For the cards the player would like to retain, the ‘hold’ buttons need to be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can decide to keep any amount of cards they want, from all to none.
After the enthusiast has selected which cards he or she would like to retain, the player will then press ‘deal’, at which point any fresh cards will be dealt if desired. The hand is now finished, with the Video Poker machine analyzing the cards to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands listed in the pay out schedule.
Generally, the lowest succeeding hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money getting larger for each better hand. A list of common winning hands begins with jacks or better, moving on to 2 pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It goes without saying that the pay out schedule can change from game to game, so that discerning bettors are agile enough to choose the most profitable game every time.
After the initial round has finished, the player can either choose to continue on and try to to maximize their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to cash out any credits that have been won. Further, several styles of the game allow the gambler an opportunity to double their profits, in which instance another hand is played. There are also variations between specific games, with some virtual decks having wild cards and other differing elements to enhance playability.
